NewsImportant Note: Next week (beginning Monday 7th September) the path from the road through the churchyard to St. Catherine's church will be closed as work to connect the new extension to the mains drainage has to be carried out (at last).
Access to the churchyard is still possible by going through the Coalhouse Fort Country Park to the sea wall and from there through the small wooden gate in the hedge.
We apologise for any inconvenience that this may cause but it is really unavoidable given the nature of the work to be done for the provision of toilets at the church.
Please note that Sunday 1st March was the last time that we had our services at St. Catherine's until
July / August as the building is being redeveloped to include toilets, kitchen, storage and revised heating.
While this work is being undertaken the contractors, Bakers of Danbury, will be in possession of the building and all our services will be held at the St. Francis Centre in Linford.
The latest news on the development of St. Catherine's is that the work on the extension and the interior of the building is nearing completion, with the new extension now being connected to the main drains and gas supplies. Once this has been accomplished the electricians, plumbers and heating engineers will be able to complete their installations.
With regard to the roof the plans are for the scaffolding to be erected in the week beginning 14th September with work starting in earnest in the following week. The project is estimated to take some 10 weeks and so it will be sometime in November before the work is finished. Our current thoughts are that Advent Sunday is likely to be the time that we can formally re-dedicate the building. The revised faculty (Diocesan permission) sets a date of June 2017 for the completion of the final phase of the repairs to the building such as the external walls and porch.
On the afternoon of Sunday 30th August the church was open for people to see what had been done so far and what remained to be done. We had a considerable number of visitors both local and from further afield. All who spoke to us said how impressed they were with what was being done. If you would like to read the leaflet that was available on the day it can be found here and there are some pictures on our Gallery page.
